French Classes


French classes are offered through our tutoring and enrichment center, Smith Street Workshop. Our goal is to make language learning fun and meaningful and to instill a lifelong love and appreciation for the French language and culture. Taught by our beloved instructor Nathalie (bio below), the classes are small in size and personalized. We offer classes for students in elementary and middle & high school, as well as for adults!

Elementary Students

Grades: 2–5

Beginner/Advanced Beginner French

Dates: Jan 24–Jun 5, 2024

This class is geared both towards students who have had little to no French instruction, and for those who have had some exposure to French and are looking to advance their skills. The class is fun, engaging, interactive, light, but rigorous with underlying language objectives embedded into each activity.

Intermediate French

This course is geared for students who have at least one year of French instruction. The class focuses on reinforcing four skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. Students will work individually and in groups, role-play, play games, all with the objective of building a strong French foundation.


Middle/High School Students

Grades: 6–12

Advanced French Creative Writing

Dates: Jan 24–Jun 5, 2024

In this course, students will refine vocabulary and syntax by exploring creative writing in French. They will produce their own diverse texts, developing creativity and learning to organize their thoughts and ideas. Designed for students with a strong French background.

Come join us for coffee and conversation in this French class for adults. Through this course, students will develop a higher level of proficiency in listening and speaking in French. The curriculum will be adapted to the level of the students.

 

Meet the Instructor

 

Nathalie B. is a native French speaker, originally from Belgium, where she earned a Masters Degree in French Language and Literature at Louvain University. She began her teaching career in Brussels, and after living in Poland for several years, she and her family moved to New York. She has worked as a private French tutor with both children and adults and created curricula for various French after school programs.

 

Beginner/Advanced Beginner: Previously none or little exposure to French language.

Intermediate: Basic conversational skills / the student can understand the main point in short and clear messages, and communicate on familiar topics with simple sentences.

Advanced: The student can understand more complex conversations and can interact with more spontaneity in discussions.

*To provide these courses at the price listed, our group classes require a minimum of 2 participants. Please be aware that we may need to increase the price of the class if the minimum number of participants is not met. In the event that there is a price change, you will be given advance notification and the option to continue at the new rate or receive a refund.

Cancellation Policy:

  1. If you notify us a month before the class begins, you can apply for a 100% credit on your account for a future enrollment, or a 75% refund.

  2. If you notify us up to two weeks before the class begins, you may receive a 100% credit on your account for a future registration, or 50% refund.

  3. One week before the class begins, we cannot make adjustments or offer credits
